Finding the Right Lab
All labs are not created equal
There are a few simple measures you can take to ensure that you’ve selected the correct lab for reliable and accurate DNA paternity testing and reporting. First, ask yourself what your priorities are:
- Confidentiality?
- Accreditation?
- Costs?
- Location?
- Reporting or turnaround time?
- Reputation?
It is strongly recommended you choose a paternity testing lab that is accredited: this means that the lab has undergone either national and/or international testing standards and is certified as a safe, reputable, and professional laboratory. Therefore, it is recommended that you find a lab that is both ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and AABB (American Association of Blood Banks Accredited Laboratory) certified.
The websites of most laboratories will have their accreditations listed on their homepage. If you don’t see the accreditations listed, ask about them and check them out. Be sure they aren’t creating fake accreditations or displaying logos meant to look like something that they are not. Sometimes, although not always, a lack of accreditation may be reflected in a laboratory's price structure. Regardless, the last thing you need when seeking peace of mind or legal support is a lack of confidence in your choice of a testing lab. Remember, all labs are not created equal!
Confidential Reporting and Location
Most professional laboratories guarantee confidentiality - their reputation depends upon it. If you choose a local DNA paternity testing lab, check out their reputation with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and other local reporting agencies. Are there any registered complaints? Furthermore, inquire about the lab's confidentiality policies. Is all mailing done in plain, unmarked envelopes? Are there passwords and limited methods of communication in place? Do they leave voicemail? If, after asking these questions, you aren’t completely comfortable with a laboratory's policies, you should consider selecting a different lab.
Another option available to you is using the services of an international laboratory.
Many international labs have ISO accreditation and have locations or established networks in numerous countries throughout the world. Therefore, if you choose, you can provide the tissue samples at a third-party location that is convenient to you. However, the samples will be sent to the internationally-based laboratory for processing and testing.
The cost of using an international laboratory is usually higher than using a domestic laboratory. Make sure that you convert the cost of the testing into your local currency so that you’re not surprised when it comes time to pay.
Costs and Reporting Time
Paternity Testing Costs and Reporting turnaround times vary immensely. The costs associated with paternity testing and the reporting time frames are usually contingent on your needs and personal choices.
Reputation
It is important that you thoroughly check out the reputation of the DNA paternity testing lab before you choose one. So questions to ask are as follows:
- Are they accredited?
- Do they have any complaints registered with the Better Business Bureau?
- Do they have any substantiated negative reports or articles about them on the internet or with government agencies, such as the Government Accountability Office (GAO) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)?
There are many variables to consider when selecting a laboratory. It is strongly suggested that you take the time to research your options and then decide what action is appropriate for you.
